Aramid yarn (Kevlar) in patch cords acts as a strength member, primarily to enhance the cable’s tensile strength. It is laid around the optical fiber and beneath the outer jacket. When the patch cord is subjected to tensile forces, the aramid yarn bears the majority of the load, preventing these forces from being directly transferred to the fragile optical fiber. This load sharing mechanism effectively protects the internal fiber from breaking, ensuring the integrity and functionality of the optical link, especially during installation or in applications where the cable might experience pulling or tension.
