In the fields of fiber optics and fiber sensing, light traveling in the cladding (physically known as **cladding mode** ) can be either a useful signal or stray interference, **entirely depending on the specific working scenario and application objective**. It can be a highly detrimental “harmful stray light” in some situations, and a highly sensitive “key signal” in others.

### I. In Communications, High-Power Lasers, and Traditional Physical Quantity Sensing: It is Interfering Stray Light and a Hazard

In classic applications primarily aimed at **optical energy transmission, information communication, and high-precision temperature/strain measurement** , cladding modes are defined as **harmful interfering stray light**.

1. **Causing Multimode Interference and Signal Distortion:**
In single-mode fiber transmission, we expect the optical signal to be entirely confined within the core and propagate as a single fundamental mode. If light within the core enters the cladding due to micro-bending, splice misalignment, or grating coupling, forming cladding modes, this light will propagate by reflecting at the interface between the cladding and the air (or coating). Due to its different phase and group velocity compared to the fundamental core mode, if it couples back into the core during subsequent propagation, it will cause multimode interference (MPI), leading to phase noise and waveform distortion in the communication signal.
2. **Inducing High-Power Thermal Effects and Fiber Burnout:**
In high-power fiber lasers or amplifiers, the optical power leaked into the cladding can be very high. This cladding light is absorbed by the outer polymer coating during transmission, converting into significant thermal energy. If heat accumulates, it can directly burn out the fiber coating. Therefore, in high-power laser systems, cladding power strippers (CPS) must be installed at specific locations to forcibly filter out this portion of light.
3. **Generating Signal Interference in Conventional Grating Sensing:**
In the transmission spectrum of standard fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), the core mode couples with cladding modes, producing a series of dense “cladding mode loss peaks” on the short-wavelength side of the main reflection peak (typically operating around wavelength \lambda = 1550\text{ nm}). These loss peaks cause a decrease in the transmission signal intensity.
For example, when using standard [OFSCN® Polyacrylate Fiber Bragg Gratings / FBG Strings (Bare)](https://www.ofscn.net/fbg-products/smf28e-fbg.html) for high-precision temperature or strain measurements, engineers primarily utilize the wavelength drift of the main core reflection peak. If the cladding mode loss peaks are too strong, they can interfere with signal demodulation. In such cases, selecting high-quality single-mode fibers (like [OFSCN® Single Mode Polyimide Fiber](https://www.ofscn.org/optical-fibers/polyimide-coated-sm-300.html)) or optimizing the grating writing process is often employed to reduce the negative interference from cladding modes.

### II. In Environmental Refractive Index, Biochemical, and Liquid Level Sensing: It is the Core Useful Signal

Conversely, in specialized sensing scenarios such as **environmental refractive index, chemical concentration, liquid level, or biomolecule detection** , cladding modes are the **most critical and indispensable carriers of useful signals**.

1. **Unique Advantage of Evanescent Field:**
Because the fiber core is tightly encased by a thick cladding (the cladding diameter of a standard single-mode fiber is 125\ \mu\text{m}), the evanescent field of the core mode cannot reach the external medium. Therefore, the core mode is completely insensitive to changes in the external environmental refractive index n\_{\text{ext}}.
However, cladding modes propagate at the interface between the cladding and the external medium, with their evanescent field extending directly into the external medium. When the refractive index n\_{\text{ext}}, concentration, or chemical composition of the external medium changes slightly, the effective refractive index n\_{\text{eff,clad}} of the cladding mode immediately undergoes a significant alteration, leading to a highly regular drift in its resonance wavelength or intensity.
2. **Core Application Device Design:**
  - **Long Period Fiber Gratings (LPG) and Tilted Fiber Bragg Gratings (TFBG):** These specialized gratings can selectively couple light from the core into specific cladding modes. By monitoring the position or intensity changes of the cladding mode resonance peaks in the transmission spectrum, one can achieve high-sensitivity measurement of the surrounding environmental refractive index, the concentration of specific gases, or even detect biomacromolecules through specific functionalization.
  - **Etched/Tapered Fiber Sensors:** By thinning the fiber cladding through chemical etching, a portion of the core mode is converted into quasi-cladding modes that can contact the external medium, greatly enhancing the fiber’s sensitivity to the surrounding chemical and physical environment.

### Summary Comparison of Physical Mechanisms

| Evaluation Dimension | Communications / High-Power Laser / Conventional Temperature-Strain Measurement | Environmental Refractive Index / Chemical Concentration / Bio-Sensing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Property of Cladding Mode** | **Interfering Stray Light (Harmful)** | **Signal Carrier (Useful)** |
| **Primary Negative Manifestations** | Causing multimode interference, optical intensity attenuation, high-power thermal effects leading to fiber burnout | None |
| **Primary Engineering Handling Methods** | **Stripping and Suppression** via cladding power strippers or process control | **Excitation and Enhancement** via specialized grating designs (e.g., LPG, TFBG) |

In summary, whether light traveling in the cladding is “treasure” or “trash” depends entirely on the system’s design objectives. In precision optical engineering, “suppressing harmful cladding modes” or “utilizing useful cladding modes” through appropriate structural design is key to reflecting the design level of optoelectronic instruments.
