In optical engineering, after 1,000 mating cycles, there is a significant physical risk of optical signal weakening (increased insertion loss), and in severe cases, it can even lead to peak distortion or loss of peaks in the demodulator.

### I. What is “Mating Durability” of Fiber Optic Connectors?

Mating durability of fiber optic connectors refers to the maximum number of insertion and removal cycles after which their optical performance (primarily insertion loss \text{IL} and return loss \text{RL}) remains within the engineering-specified range.

According to international standards (such as IEC 61300-2-2, TIA-568, etc.), the standard mating durability for conventional high-precision ceramic ferrule connectors (like FC/APC, FC/PC, SC/APC, etc.) is typically rated between 500\sim 1000 cycles. Standards usually require that after the specified number of mating cycles, the change in insertion loss is:

\Delta\text{IL} \le 0.2\ \text{dB}

However, please note: this specification is measured under ideal laboratory conditions with **strict ultra-clean environments, standardized mating procedures, and professional cleaning after each mating**.

In actual engineering and laboratory operations, 1,000 mating cycles often lead to more significant performance degradation.

### II. Physical Mechanisms of Signal Weakening After 1,000 Mating Cycles

The core physical requirement for fiber optic connection is to **precisely align two single-mode fiber cores, each approximately 9\ \mu\text{m} in diameter, with sub-micrometer (\< 1\ \mu\text{m}) axial accuracy in close contact**.

After 1,000 repeated mating cycles, the following mechanical and physical changes will cause a significant increase in optical loss:

1. **Micro-wear of the Ceramic End Face and Fiber Undercut**
FC series fiber optic connectors utilize a physical contact (PC) mechanism. During repeated elastic compression and rotational alignment, micro/nano-scale wear occurs on the ceramic ferrule end face. When the fiber core sinks relative to the ceramic end face (undercut) or develops scratches, intimate glass-to-glass contact between cores cannot be achieved, introducing small air gaps with refractive index mismatch, leading to Fresnel reflection and geometric misalignment losses.
2. **Fatigue and Wear of the Ferrule Ceramic Alignment Sleeve**
The flange interface inside the demodulator panel is equipped with a precision split ceramic sleeve. With each mating cycle, the ceramic sleeve undergoes radial expansion and rebound. After 1,000 mating cycles, wear or elastic fatigue may occur within the sleeve, reducing its centering and clamping force on the ferrule, leading to lateral misalignment between the fiber cores. According to coupled physics models, a radial misalignment of just 1\ \mu\text{m} in a single-mode fiber can introduce an additional insertion loss of approximately 0.2\ \text{dB}.
3. **Debris Contamination**
Repeated friction between the metal threads of the connector plug housing, the keyway, and the ceramic ferrule sleeve inevitably generates sub-micron metallic debris and ceramic dust. If not rigorously cleaned in a dust-free environment, even tiny debris particles, once pressed into the effective mode field diameter of the 9\ \mu\text{m} core, will cause extremely strong light scattering and absorption losses, instantly resulting in several decibels (or even tens of decibels) of attenuation.

### III. Impact on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Demodulators

Fiber Bragg grating demodulators use wavelength encoding technology. Unlike a simple optical power meter, the demodulator identifies the center position of the Bragg wavelength reflection peak \lambda\_B:

\lambda\_B = 2 n\_{\text{eff}} \Lambda

While insertion loss itself does not change the center wavelength of the reflection peak, when interface mating after 1,000 cycles causes significant weakening of the optical signal:

- **Reduced Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)**: With reduced optical power, the signal received by the detector (e.g., photodiode array or linear detector unit) approaches the background electronic noise, causing jitter in the center wavelength calculated by the peak-finding algorithm, thus reducing measurement accuracy.
- **Reflection Peak Distortion and Lost Peaks** : If end-face contamination or wear introduces stray interference or severe reflections, the shape of the reflection peak may become asymmetrically distorted. When the returned optical power falls below the demodulator’s dynamic detection sensitivity threshold, the demodulator channel will report “no sensor” or “fiber break.”

### IV. Engineering Protection Guidelines and Recommendations

To prevent damage to the demodulator’s internal original interface, it is recommended to adopt the following standardized measures:

1. **Install a “Sacrificial Patch Cord”**
Repeatedly plugging and unplugging external sensor optical cables directly into the demodulator’s panel ports is strictly prohibited. It is recommended to permanently connect a high-quality single-mode fiber patch cord to the demodulator’s output port, and all mating operations should be performed on this patch cord. When the patch cord reaches its mating cycle limit, it should be replaced at a low cost, thus permanently protecting the demodulator’s internal interface.
2. **Regular End-Face Inspection and Dust-Free Cleaning**
Before each mating, use a Fiber Inspection Scope to check the end-face cleanliness and look for scratches. Use a dedicated one-click fiber cleaner or lint-free cleaning wipes to clean the ferrule end face.
