Without accurate demodulation, even the best sensor is just a piece of glass, isn’t it?

From the perspective of the engineering and physical architecture of optical sensing systems, this statement largely hits the mark.

### I. Division of Labor in “Encoding” and “Decoding” Physical Quantities

An FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensing system forms a complete closed loop consisting of two main parts: **front-end passive encoding (sensors)** and **back-end active demodulation (interrogator)**.

1. **Role of the Front-End Sensor – Wavelength Modulation (Encoding):**
Fiber Bragg Grating sensors are based on the Bragg reflection principle, where the center reflection wavelength \lambda\_B satisfies the formula:

2. **Role of the Back-End Demodulator – Spectral Calculation (Decoding):**
The interrogator integrates a light source (broadband source or high-speed wavelength-tunable laser), optical filtering/spectroscopic components, a photodetector, and high-precision wavelength calculation algorithms. It is responsible for emitting light and collecting the reflected spectrum in real-time. Through precision peak-finding algorithms, it determines the current \lambda\_B and then converts it into calibrated physical data.

Without a demodulator or if the demodulator lacks sufficient precision, even though optical physical modulation processes are occurring within the fiber, the system cannot extract any quantifiable data.

### II. Why is the Demodulator the “Anchor” of the System?

In practical engineering systems, the demodulator typically determines the performance ceiling of the entire measurement chain:

1. **Benchmark Limit for System Resolution and Accuracy:**
The temperature sensitivity of Fiber Bragg Gratings is typically around 10\text{ pm/℃}, and the strain sensitivity is approximately 1.2\text{ pm/}\mu\varepsilon. If a demodulator possesses a wavelength resolution of 1\text{ pm}, the system’s theoretical limit resolution can reach about 0.1\text{ ℃} or micro-strain levels; if the demodulator’s internal temperature drift control is poor or it lacks a dynamic wavelength calibration reference, the entire system will experience systematic drift that cannot be corrected by the front-end sensor.
2. **Determiner of System Dynamic Characteristics:**
The front-end fiber material itself possesses extremely high dynamic response bandwidths for acoustics and strain. However, the frequency at which the system can capture vibrations or dynamic impacts (e.g., 10\text{ Hz}, 50\text{ Hz}, or 100\text{ Hz}) depends entirely on the demodulator’s sweep rate, detector response speed, and underlying data throughput capabilities.
3. **Multiplexing (WDM) Capability for Multi-Point Demultiplexing:**
When multiple gratings with different wavelengths are connected in series on a single optical fiber, a multi-channel, wide-spectral-range demodulator is the sole central unit for achieving independent measurement point differentiation, crosstalk suppression, and synchronized channel acquisition.
