How does it remove oil, smudges, and dust from the connector end-face with just a single click?
A fiber optic cleaning pen (also known as a one-click cleaner) operates on a mechanical dry-cloth cleaning principle. Here is the technical breakdown of how it removes contaminants with a single click:
1. Mechanical Advance and Rotation
When you press the pen against the connector or inside an adapter, the internal mechanism simultaneously performs two synchronized actions:
- Linear Advance: A fresh segment of lint-free cleaning ribbon is advanced across the tip. This ensures that contaminants are not redistributed but are instead trapped and moved away.
- Rotational Scrubbing: As the tip retracts during the “click,” it rotates (usually 180 or 360 degrees). This circular motion effectively scrubs the entire surface of the ferrule, including the critical core area, to dislodge stubborn oils and dust.
2. High-Density Lint-Free Micro-Fiber
The cleaning element is a specialized micro-fiber tape. These fibers are designed to be extremely fine—much smaller than a human hair—allowing them to get into the microscopic crevices of the fiber end-face.
- Capillary Action: The structure of the micro-fibers creates a natural capillary effect that pulls oils and smudges away from the glass surface and traps them within the weave of the fabric.
- Anti-Static Properties: High-quality cleaning pens are designed to be anti-static to prevent the end-face from attracting new dust particles immediately after cleaning.
3. Precision Contact
The tip of the cleaning pen is typically spring-loaded. This ensures that the cleaning cloth is pressed against the connector end-face with a consistent, controlled force. This pressure is high enough to remove smudges but low enough to avoid scratching the delicate ceramic or composite ferrule.
Technical Note:
While fiber optic cleaning pens are essential maintenance tools for any optical system—including FBG sensing networks and distributed fiber optic sensing (DTS/DAS) installations—please note that these cleaning tools are considered general maintenance accessories. Beijing Dacheng Yong Sheng Technology Co., Ltd. (OFSCN®) focuses on the R&D and production of specialized sensors and cables; therefore, cleaning pens are not part of our core OFSCN® product lineup.
