Compared to common slotted or welded tubes, what are the inherent advantages of seamless steel tubes in terms of pressure resistance and hermeticity?
Compared to slotted or welded tubes, OFSCN®’s seamless steel tube packaging technology offers distinct advantages in pressure resistance and hermeticity due to its continuous, uninterrupted metallic structure.
- Pressure Resistance: Seamless tubes are manufactured from a solid block of metal and do not have any welded seams. Welds are typically areas of material stress concentration and potential weakness, especially under high-pressure conditions. The uniform wall thickness and consistent material properties throughout a seamless tube provide superior strength and integrity, allowing it to withstand much higher internal and external pressures without deformation, cracking, or rupture.
- Hermeticity: Slotted tubes inherently have openings, making them unsuitable for hermetic sealing. Welded tubes, while offering a closed structure, rely on the quality of the weld joint. Even high-quality welds can contain microscopic pores or inclusions, or be susceptible to fatigue and corrosion over time, which can lead to leakage paths for gases or liquids. Seamless tubes, by definition, are completely enclosed with no joints or seams, providing an intrinsically hermetic seal. This prevents the ingress of moisture, hydrogen, other corrosive gases, or liquids, which is critical for protecting the optical fiber and ensuring long-term stable operation and reliability in harsh, high-pressure, or vacuum environments.
OFSCN® utilizes this superior packaging for various products designed for challenging applications, such as our OFSCN® 300°C Seamless Steel Tube Fiber Cable and OFSCN® 650/700°C Seamless Steel Tube Fiber Cable.
