What is the Dynamic Range of an Interrogator?

Why is a large dynamic range essential for complex optical paths with long distances and multiple connectors?

A large dynamic range is crucial for a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) interrogator when dealing with complex optical paths, long distances, and multiple connectors for several technical reasons:

  1. Signal Attenuation: As the optical signal travels along long fiber optic cables, especially when passing through numerous connectors, splices, or bends, it experiences significant optical power loss (attenuation). Each connector or splice introduces insertion loss, cumulatively weakening the FBG reflection signals.
  2. Varying FBG Reflection Strengths: Not all FBG sensors reflect light with the same intensity. Some might have inherently weaker reflectivity, or their position in a long chain of sensors might mean their reflected signal has undergone more attenuation before reaching the interrogator.
  3. Accurate Detection of Weak Signals: A wide dynamic range allows the interrogator to accurately detect and measure FBG reflections even when they are very weak due to attenuation. If the dynamic range is too narrow, the interrogator might fail to detect signals from FBG sensors located further down the optical path or those with lower reflectivity, leading to incomplete or inaccurate data.
  4. System Robustness: In complex monitoring networks where multiple FBG sensors are multiplexed over long distances, a large dynamic range ensures the system’s robustness, allowing it to function reliably despite varying optical losses across different measurement points.

For these reasons, OFSCN® Fiber Bragg Grating Interrogators are designed with a substantial dynamic range to ensure high performance and reliable data acquisition even in demanding applications with complex optical layouts.
