What is the "Phase Mask Method"?

What is the role of the template-like tool used during production? Is it a consumable item?

The “template-like tool” you are referring to in the context of the Phase Mask Method is called a Phase Mask.

In the production of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), its role and nature are as follows:

1. The Role of the Phase Mask

The Phase Mask is a high-precision diffractive optical element (usually made of silica glass with fine physical gratings etched onto its surface).

  • Diffraction and Interference: When a UV laser beam passes through the phase mask, it is diffracted. The phase mask is designed to suppress the zero-order beam and maximize the ±1 orders. These diffracted beams interfere with each other, creating a periodic light-and-dark pattern (interference fringe) in space.
  • Refractive Index Modulation: The optical fiber is placed directly behind the phase mask. The interference pattern “writes” a corresponding periodic change in the refractive index of the fiber’s core through a photochemical reaction. This creates the FBG.
  • Precision Control: The period of the Phase Mask directly determines the center wavelength of the FBG. It acts as a “master template” for the grating structure.

2. Is it a Consumable?

Technically, a Phase Mask is not a consumable item in the same way that sandpaper or glue is.

  • Longevity: It is a high-value precision optical component designed for long-term use. A single mask can be used to manufacture thousands or even tens of thousands of FBGs.
  • Degradation: However, it can degrade over time due to high-intensity UV laser exposure or surface contamination (dust, oil). If the mask becomes damaged or “burned” by the laser, it must be replaced to maintain the quality and accuracy of the sensors.
  • Fixed Parameter: Because one mask corresponds to a specific grating period, if a manufacturer needs to produce an FBG with a significantly different wavelength, they must use a different phase mask.

At OFSCN (Beijing Dacheng Yongsheng Technology Co., Ltd.), we utilize high-precision Phase Mask technology to manufacture our range of FBG sensors, ensuring high consistency and reliability in demanding environments.
