How are fragile connectors and sensing ends protected during transport and installation?
For the protection of fragile connectors and sensing ends of fiber optic sensors during transport and installation, several measures are typically employed:
- Protective Caps for Connectors: Fiber optic connectors (such as FC/APC) are fitted with protective plastic or metal caps. These caps prevent dust and moisture ingress, and offer physical protection to the delicate ceramic ferrule and optical fiber end face from scratches or impact.
- Robust Encapsulation for Sensing Ends: For the sensing elements, especially in industrial applications, robust packaging plays a crucial role. For example, OFSCN® utilizes seamless steel tube encapsulation for many of its Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Strain Sensors and FBG Temperature Sensors. This all-metal design inherently protects the internal optical fiber and grating from mechanical stresses, abrasion, and environmental factors encountered during handling, transport, and installation in harsh environments.
- Proper Handling and Packaging: Sensors are carefully coiled and secured to prevent kinking or excessive bending. For sensitive or multiple sensors, custom-designed packaging or cases with foam inserts are used to absorb shocks and prevent movement, ensuring the integrity of both the sensing elements and connectors.
