What is biological attack resistance?

In the ocean, how do we prevent oysters and algae from attaching to the jumper wires?

Preventing the adhesion and erosion of barnacles (such as barnacles, oysters, and other hard-shelled biofouling organisms) and algae on the surface of underwater fiber optic patch cords or cables falls under the domain of Biofouling Resistance in marine engineering and fiber optic protection.

In practical engineering applications, protection is mainly achieved through the following physical mechanisms and engineering means:

I. Technical Principles for Preventing Marine Organism Adhesion and Erosion

  1. Low Surface Energy Material Control (Foul-Release)
Marine organism adhesion relies on the bio-colloids they secrete. By using outer sheaths made of low surface energy polymers (such as high-density polyethylene PE, fluoropolymers, or silicon-fluorine coatings), the wettability and adhesion of biological mucus on the sheath surface can be effectively reduced. This makes it difficult for initial algae spores or larvae to firmly colonize, causing them to naturally detach under water flow.

  2. Antifouling Coatings
Applying physical/chemical antifouling coatings containing anti-fouling agents (such as antifouling paint, copper-based, or silicone/fluorine antifouling coatings) to the outermost sheath surface of the patch cord. This inhibits organism adhesion and growth by slowly releasing small amounts of anti-fouling components or providing a superhydrophobic surface.

  3. High-Strength Metallic Physical Barrier (Mechanical & Armor Protection)
Hard-shelled organisms like barnacles exert strong compressive forces during their growth, and their secretions are acidic and corrosive. Mechanical scraping during cleaning of attached matter can also easily damage soft sheaths. Therefore, high-compressive strength, corrosion-resistant seamless stainless steel pipes or steel wire stranded armor structures must be used as an internal physical barrier to prevent micro-bending loss caused by the extrusion of biofouling on optical fibers, or even damage to the outer sheath and fiber breakage.
