  • Relationship with “Point-based” Monitoring:
    “Point-based” monitoring involves using a single sensor to measure at one specific location. FBG sensors can function as point sensors when only one FBG is used. However, “quasi-distributed” monitoring extends this by allowing multiple FBG sensors to be multiplexed along a single fiber. Each FBG reflects light at a unique wavelength, enabling individual interrogation and measurement at each point. This makes it more efficient than deploying separate, individual point sensors with their own cabling.

  • Relationship with “Fully Distributed” Monitoring:
    “Fully distributed” monitoring, such as Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) or Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) systems based on Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin scattering, measures parameters continuously along the entire length of the optical fiber. There are no discrete “sensors” in the traditional sense; the fiber itself acts as the sensing medium. In contrast, “quasi-distributed” monitoring provides measurements only at the specific locations where the FBG sensors are inscribed on the fiber, not continuously along the entire path between them.
